Wood

In recent years, manufacturers of wooden doors and windows are losing share in a challenging housing market due to very high competition of plastic windows. Is it the substitute’s quality or mere temporary fashion?

The answer to this question will be given through competition in the market. For this reason, manufacturers of wooden joinery initiated a cause for a better awareness of all current and future investors in house building.

Well, if you’re interested in or are about to decide whether your home or office should be equipped with wooden windows or some other – please read the following… It is interesting … Wooden windows breathe…

DID YOU KNOW ?

  • With proper design, construction and care wooden window can withstand more than 100 years.
  • Wood windows have demonstrated the highest degree of thermal and sound insulation.
  • Wood windows have, unlike all other materials, the ability of vapour diffusion. This is important because of the microclimate of indoor space. In the bedroom, bathroom or kitchen, where the person gets rid of a larger quantity of water by breathing, sweating and consumption of water from the tap, only wooden windows eject the excess moisture out through diffusion. Wooden windows “breathe”. In that way they protect the room and furniture in it from the mould.

If the air is dry, which usually occurs in winter due to heating, wood provides needed moisture from the outside by diffusing it through the room. It’s called “healthy climate changes”, and it is caused by the wood cellulose.

* Wooden windows, with their high stability, achieve adherence efficiency and are waterproof to precipitation. Plastic windows are produced from two components – plastic and steel frame that gives it its strength. These two components affect the different reaction of different materials on the temperature difference. Therefore, they are sensitive to deformation and, consequently, the optimal adherence.

* Varnishing the windows has recently changed the wrong (universally accepted) opinion that maintenance of wooden windows is difficult. The alleged benefit of plastic windows, which was the biggest argument, is that maintaining is not necessary?!

Every window should be maintained, at least cleaned. Wooden windows with their anti-static effect to a large extent repel dirt, while other materials, especially plastics through its electrostatic characteristics bond all the dirt from the air, especially in urban areas. Rainfall cannot wash away the dirt from plastic windows (it takes deep mechanical washing) and it can on the wooden ones. Today, modern wooden windows with high quality environmental acrylic varnish, provide lasting protection and easy maintenance.

In case of fire

Only the surface of the wood turns into charcoal, stability is preserved for a long time, there is little smoke. PVC produces highly toxic fumes (dioxin, hydrochloric acid vapour), the stability of a window is lost.

Wooden windows burn – but often slower than other materials. They can resist fire more than 90 minutes and take care of static stability. Also, it develops only a bit of (not dangerous) gases, which emerge only from the top coating, other than carbon dioxide and water.

PVC windows are, unlike wood, very dangerous when burning. They form hydrochloric acid, which is spread through smoke, accumulated and enters the surface. Dioxin, ultra poison, is also formed. The fire at the airport in Düsseldorf, Germany, killed several people due to inhalation of toxic gases created when the plastic windows started burning. Repair of dioxins and acid salt, which defiles the environment, is very expensive and is performed only by experts.

Wood acts much better in a fire than other materials. It burns much slower and at the same time, remains stable.

Wooden windows are suitable for fire protection – primarily because of their stability. When plastic windows are affected in firem hydrochloric acid, which destroys living space and complete interior, is formed. At the same time, toxic gases can easily contaminate the area.

What is dioxin: dioxin is a symbol for 210 different poly-chlorinated di-benzo-oxides and furans. These extremely toxic gases occur primarily when high heat affects the chlorine-organic products (such as PVC) in a fire or burning waste. Dioxins are harmful already in nano-concentrations. They cause cancerous diseases, immune system damage, nerves and liver damage and chromosomes changes. At the same, time one should bear in mind that the cause of 80% of all deaths in fire is smoke toxicity.

Using wooden windows means living in accordance with environment!

Wood is a unique material for building and design, which can be renewed (re-growth) and ideally combines all the environmental and economic aspects. To get wood we do not need any other raw material, since wood grown with help of solar energy.
Of all construction materials, lumber and wood elements require least energy for their preparation, processing, production and after use – their destruction.
While a tree is growing it bonds carbon and stores it in the phase of use.
It also helps keep the effective reduction of carbon dioxide (CO2).
Wood is an integral part of a closed cycle. Thus, the wooden window frames at the end of its use are interesting energy carriers.
Wooden frames protected with varnish or water based coating are environmentally suitable. Wooden windows are comfortable; provide healthy living and the desired shaping.
Wood is pure nature. Different types of wood design the interior in all the desired shapes. Wooden windows provide a pleasant abode.
Wood has a pleasant surface temperature and is pleasant to the touch.
Wooden windows are not filled with static electricity, are healthy and allow easy cleaning.
Burning wood does not release any toxic gas.
Wood frames are easily renewed with a new coat of paint and always look like new.
Using different forms of wooden windows, facades of buildings are individually shaped. Wood is an obligatory material for building under the protection of cultural monuments. Wood for the fabrication of windows and laminated profiles has high stability. They are stable in form and temperature.
Modern construction of wooden windows meets all the requirements (heat, sound and protection from weathering).
Wooden windows with its good frame thermal insulation are particularly suitable for low energy houses.
In combination with special glass and appropriate hinges, they meet high demands regarding the protection from the sun, burglary and fire hazards.

Wooden windows are long term investments!

Wooden windows are construction elements with long service life. They are not demanding as other materials when it comes to maintenance.
They can be easily cleaned, cared for and maintained.
In case of damage wooden windows are easily repaired, they can also be later equipped with different framings.
Wooden windows are resistant to long-term mechanical load.
Wooden windows are economically more acceptable than PVC windows due to their longevity.

Stability and mechanical firmness.

PVC windows have to be strengthened with metal profiles/frames. This iron cast is first inserted, then connected by screws with PVC profile. Artificial materials with time begin to slide due to permanent loads. Since the metal sections are not connected in the corner, under some circumstances, casements become distorted. By contrast, wooden windows have their own stability and good mechanical firmness.

Distortion (due to heat).

PVC window frames are easily distorted, which depends on the quality of PVC profiles. Result: The windows lack adhesion, are difficult to open and close. Subsequent mounting of distorted PVC windows is a problem.

Thermal insulation.

Different values of insulating materials for windows lead to a different height in demand of heat energy. Wooden windows have no additional costs and provide highest insulating value. PVC window provide less thermal insulation then its competitor made from wood.

Consistency in various harmful substances.

Wood – good stability, it requires care; (wood-aluminium is optimally protected due to coating); PVC – harmful substances in the air attack PVC, with a result of possible change in colour (‘yellowing’ windows).

Shaping possibilities.

Wooden window frame adapts to the buyer. This allows the best adaptation of an existing window to the facade. A wide range of metal profiles and the possibility of making drip lines from the same material make wooden windows a real treat for the architects. Wooden windows meet all the requirements of static.
